Robin Rector Krupp says of herself, "I am an artist
who also
writes...likes to dress up...is a
teacher and veteran traveler...works with and is married to Ed Krupp,
the Director of the
Griffith Observatory...is thankful to be doing children's books..."
Yes, Robin writes and illustrates books for children. Three of these
books on astronomy have
been done with her husband, Dr. Ed Krupp. Their first book, The Comet
and You, won the
American Institute Best Science Award, the first time the prize has ever
been awarded to a
children's book. The book also won the "Best Work of Nonfiction Award"
from the Southern
California Council for Literature for Young People.
Other joint Krupp titles include The Moon and You and The Big Dipper and
You, which was
selected as "Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children" by the
Children's Book Council.
Robin has written and illustrated Get Set to Wreck!, Let's Go Traveling
in Mexico, and Let's Go
Traveling! The latter was chosen to be in the Crown Collection, one of
the 25 book read in
Christian schools across the U.S.
Additionally, Robin presents school shows across America. She wears a
costume, demonstrates
drawing, gets children to help her on stage as she explains the process
of writing and illustrating books. For nearly 30 years Robin has been
teaching and lecturing throughout the world, including prop plane visits
to tiny Yu'pik Eskimo schools. For twelve years she has visited schools
throughout the country, often in costume, presenting programs to over
150,000 children.
Adults also benefit from Robin's knowledge and experience. She has
taught drawing and design
at Pierce College, The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising,
and California State
University at Northridge. Currently she offers seminars in Book
Illustration at Associates in Art
in Van Nuys, California.
She has been chosen twice to do the Summer Reading artwork for over
65.000 children in the
Metropolitan Cooperative Library Systems, which includes Los Angeles and
29 other cities.
Robin served a 4 year post as Advisory member of the Southern California
Children's
Booksellers Association. Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors
for California Readers,
which brings together authors, books, and Los Angeles public schools.
Women's International Center proudly acknowledges the art, artistry,
creativity and educational
outreach of Robin Rector Krupp with the 1998 Living Legacy Award. Yes,
Robin is an artist who
writes and likes to dress up.
